University of the Greater Region - UniGR
Choose a university - Help shape a European network!
In the "University of the Greater Region", UniGR for short, the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Technology Kaiserlautern-Landau works closely with the universities in Liège, Luxembourg, Lorraine (with the locations Nancy and Metz), Saarland and Trier as well as with the associated Saarland University of Applied Sciences. The association of these seven universities facilitates cooperation between students, doctoral students, lecturers and researchers and creates a network in which studying, doctoral studies, teaching and research take place in an international environment. In this association, RPTU takes the lead for the topics "Intellectual Property and Business Start-ups" in cooperation with the Start-up Office and the Contact Point for Information and Technology (KIT).

The University of the Greater Region (UniGR) is a university network that unites seven universities in five regions and four countries. Within the framework of UniGR, RPTU works closely with the universities of Saarbrücken, Liège, Luxembourg, Lorraine (Nancy and Metz campuses) and Trier, as well as with the associated Saarland University of Applied Sciences.
As part of the cross-border program for European Territorial Cooperation "Greater Region" (INTERREG IVA, 2007-2013), the network was financially supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). This INTERREG project (duration of 54 months, until April 2013) led to the establishment of a close university network, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2018. The University of the Greater Region is coordinated by the central UniGR office in Saarbrücken.
In total, the universities of the UniGR comprise around 152,000 students, 8,600 doctoral students and around 14,000 teachers and researchers - an enormous potential of knowledge and resources!
RPTU is represented in all governing bodies of the University of the Greater Region (UniGR) and is thus actively involved in shaping this network of universities - flanked by cooperation in many of the UniGR working groups.
Each of the partner universities is responsible for the supervision and organization of certain key tasks within the network. This also applies to RPTU, which, as a project partner, is responsible for the focus area of intellectual property and business start-ups.
At the same time as working in the individual focus areas, however, all other subject areas within the University of the Greater Region are also supervised by the individual partner universities. In addition to advising and supporting all RPTU stakeholders, intensive and continuous cooperation with colleagues at the partner universities (university management, administrations, professors and students) is of course also maintained and further developed.
By implementing the UniGR student status, which improves mobility between the partner universities and reduces administrative hurdles, and by expanding cross-border cooperation in research and teaching, the RPTU has already successfully implemented an important goal of the University of the Greater Region. The creation of the guidelines for the protection of intellectual property also demonstrates the active involvement of the RPTU in the creation of this university network.
The main objective of UniGR is to create a strong university network in the Greater Region that promotes cross-border cooperation between students, doctoral candidates, lecturers and researchers and in which studying, doing a doctorate, teaching and researching in an international environment is a matter of course. To this end, the mobility of students, academics and lecturers is increased and the range of courses and research profiles enriched.
In 2012, the rectors and presidents of the partner universities of the University of the Greater Region (UniGR) decided to further intensify cooperation in research and teaching between all partners.
As a first step - based on the recommendations of the European University Association (EUA) as part of an evaluation of the UniGR - three lighthouse areas were selected in which targeted cooperation is now being sought. These lighthouse areas are biomedicine, border studiesandmaterials science. Here, all universities see the opportunity to make joint use of existing strengths and resources and thus act as a significant driver of development and innovation within the Greater Region.
In a second step, possible topics within the lighthouse areas for future cooperation between UniGR academics in research and teaching were identified in orientation workshops in spring 2013. Specialist workshops have been held on these topics in order to network the research groups of the seven partner universities and, with the support of research funding experts, to get promising project ideas off the ground.
Since 2018, the UniGR has provided financial support for the organization of scientific events with a cross-border character as part of calls for proposals. The UniGR's 2020 strategic plan, which was adopted in 2020, prioritizes the development of cross-border "European Schools" in selected areas of scientific cooperation at the UniGR. These are the areas of "Materials & Metals in a Circular Economy" and "Border Studies". Events that contribute to the expansion of these European Schools will be funded in future. The UniGR Fund's application and award procedures for scientific events have been changed accordingly.
If you have any questions, please contact the UniGR officer at RPTU and the UniGR Central Office.
As a partner within the University of the Greater Region network, RPTU is intensively involved in the field of intellectual property and business start-ups. Regular meetings of experts in this field from all partner universities, so-called expert committees, are held for this purpose. Experts from administration, research and teaching from the partner universities network there and develop solutions in the context of cross-border cooperation. In addition to our UniGR office, the contact point for information and technology (KIT) and the start-up office at RPTU support these activities.
Further UniGR events and activities are already being planned and will be actively organized by RPTU.
